This rule says that you have to drink about 2 liters of water a day. Forget it . There is no scientific evidence about this. Every people need a different quantity of water, depending on their age, the climate in which they live, etc …

The only rule you have to follow is this: if you are thirsty, drink.

But do you attend to your body when you are thirsty? There are 7 scientific evidences that confirm that it is very healthy to stay hydrated.

1. Water helps improve physical performance

If you play sports, you sweat, and then you lose water. When you replace it, this new water in your body helps you to maximize your performance, reduces fatigue and reinforces your motivation.

On hot days it is very important to stay hydrated when doing exercises. Remember that your muscles are made of 85% water, if they lose water , they lose their ability to execute (1, 2).

2. Your brain is made of water by 83%

Thinking needs of hydratation.  Some studies show that even mild dehydration (1-3% body weight), can affect mood and concentration, working memory can be reduced,  and can increase fatigue and anxiety (34).

3. Water can help prevent and treat headaches

Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines in some people (5, 6). Water can relieve the intensity and duration of pain, as well as prevent the migraine in those who are dehydrated.

4. Water and constipation

Drinking more water is one of the recommendations of the protocol to treat constipation both in its prevention and when it comes to relieving its symptoms (7 , 8 ).

5. Drinking water to treat kidney stones

A higher intake of water increases the volume of urine that passes through the kidneys, which allows dilute the concentration of minerals there , so it is less likely to crystallize and form stones . (91 0).

6. Water and Hangover

Alcohol is a kind of diuretic that makes you lose more water than you drink. It is one of the effects of alcohol on your body. The result is dehydration (1112).

Dehydration is not the cause of your hangover, it is alcohol. But the lack of water generates the symptoms of the hangover: thirst, fatigue, headache and dry mouth.

At least a large glass of water before going to bed will help you to spend the next day with a bit more dignity.

7. To drink more water helps weight loss

It’s true, it’s not an urban legend.

Drinking water triggers your metabolism to digest it. 2 liters of water more in your body every day can increase total energy expenditure up to 96 calories per day (1314).

The moment when you consume water it’s also important. In one study people who drank half a liter of water before meals lost 44% more weight over a period of 12 weeks ( 15).

Of all the recommendations that are made daily to keep us fit, believe me, this is the easiest to carry out. You only need, of course, pure water in your tap.
